Ex-LMS 0-6-0 Diesel shunter M7130 is seen at the end of a shunting neck opposite Saltley shed on 21st March 1948. On the right is Duddeston Mill Road which up to the late 19th century crossed the railway at ground level via a level crossing. Bob Essery writes 'when compared to a steam locomotive, a diesel shunting engine was more cost effective. The most obvious advantage was that it could be taken to its place of work on Monday morning and remain there until the end of the week, which was usually 6pm on Sunday'. Another advantage identified by Bob Essery was that when working in sidings only one man was required to operate it, the diesel engine making the fireman redundant.
