Lawley Street Goods Depot: mrls302b

Close up of image 'mrls302' showing the corner of Lawley Street's shed and one of the cobbled driveways into the depot which was lit by gas lighting. The gas lamp posts were erected at the same time as when Lawley Street Goods Station (sic) was re-modelled in 1895. In the centre of the photograph adjacent to the tall telephone pole are two or three grounded box vans which could be used to provide mess facilities, secure accommodation for either goods and / or railway stores. Old railway coach bodies were a common sight on railways being a cheap and easy method of providing additional facilities. It was from the top of the telephone pole that the photographer took the photograph seen in image 'mrls425'. On the left are several horse-drawn carts all constructed to the same pattern and built at Derby.
