A publicity photograph of W Baker & Sons coal delivery
cart and staff in front of their offices in station drive. Above the sign on
the office displaying the name of the merchant is another sign which states
The firm that broke down the EXHORBITANT (sic) strike prices of
1912. The strike being the 1912 strike of up to one million miners which
was compounded by the dock strike in London. The delivery cart also carries the
same message on the lower of the front adverts and whilst displaying other
signs promoting the company including We lead others follow, Today's
matched prices and Best Coal 1/- (one shilling) and mixed coal
10d (ten old pence - four new pence). Barrie Geens states that the elderly
gentleman at the rear was Mr Baker whilst his son stood at the front with the
deliveryman, Louise Arthur. In the distance is the public house frequented by
the crews of the banking engines and station staff.
