View of the entrance to Bath Row tunnel at Five Ways station
looking towards New Street station. Trains departing from New Street station
would pass through five tunnels before reaching Five Ways and would also have
to combat an incline of 1:75 and 1:80 for most of the way. On occasions this
could prove to be quite a challenge to locomotives not in prime condition as
the wet rails would cause much slipping. In one instance on 6th June 1960,
ex-LMS 4-6-0 5XP No 45662 'Cornwallis' was recorded to have taken 35 minutes
whilst hauling the Bradford to Bristol express service mainly due to its
sanders not working effectively.
