Trains departing from New Street station would pass through five tunnels before reaching Five Ways and would also have to combat an incline of 1:75 and 1:80 for most of the way. On occasions this could prove to be quite a challenge to locomotives not in prime condition as the wet rails would cause much slipping. In one instance on 6th June 1960, ex-LMS 4-6-0 5XP No 45662 'Cornwallis' was recorded to have taken 35 minutes whilst hauling the Bradford to Bristol express service mainly due to its sanders not working effectively.
