Close up of image 'mre1335' showing the large number of ventilated vans employed to carry the farm produce from Evesham. The road vehicle in the yard appears to be a cart with a high sided wire frame designed to carry light loads such as lettuce rather than vegetables or fruit. Bob Essery records in his book that the busiest time for transporting goods from Evesham was during August and September when thousands of tons of red and yellow plums were shipped to market. As the MR alone was known to dispatch some 1000 tons of plums per week, he calculated that this could see in excess of 33 Vans being used per day, probably an under estimate if 6 ton loads were not achieved. The transportation of such soft perishable goods was a problem in terms of stacking the goods without damaging them. See image 'mre1341' for one attempt by the LMS to overcome this problem.
