Duddeston Road Signal Box on 3rd August 1969 some three weeks prior to its closure on 24th of the same month. Behind the signal box is Saltley Gas Works which were being demolished due to the advent of North Sea Gas. Saltley Gas Works occupied the site of Saltley Mill producing gas for domestic and industrial use from coal. It was initially a Birmingham City Council enterprise which grew and expanded and eventually covered several hundreds of acres of land along the River Rea between Saltley and Nechells. It was claimed that at their height of use these was the largest gasworks in Europe.
