The workman appears to be checking the pointwork. The wire operating the signals were laid beneath boards to avoid tripping up the shunters as was the rodding operating the points being inspected. The siding on the right has a very long check rail which according to Bob Essery was unusual in goods depot but necessary here because of the sharpness of the curve.
