The remains of the warehouse viewed from the Allport Street offices with the 1912 offices in the foreground

The remains of the warehouse viewed from the Allport Street offices with the 1912 offices in the foreground. Smoke appears to be rising from one of the chimneys indicating that the offices were still in operation on the morning of 26th October 1940 following the raid. The wagons on the right have obviously been brought in to assist in clearing the debris and include at least one wagon used to transport coal for the locomotives. These wagons are standing on what would have been the sidings located beneath the overhead travelling crane. The damage to the Central Goods Station commenced with a high explosive bomb being dropped in the night on 23rd October followed by the incendiary attack that destroyed the warehouse on the following night. A week later on 28th October 1940 three high explosive bombs dropped on or near the stables causing carnage. In the following months more incendiary attacks on Birmingham resulted in further damage. In July 1941 the goods warehouse was extensively rebuilt as a single-storey building together with repairs to the travelling overhead crane.
