View of Birmingham Central Goods Station's warehouse and covered loading dock and platform seen from Severn Street. Goods could be raised from the ground floor to the first floor by two different methods. They could be raised within the warehouse's main building by way of a crane or sack hoist, the former fixed in position and which could rotate 360°. There were several such internal hoists for this purpose. In addition, a similar facility was available but located on the outer walls to lift goods from outside the warehouse. This type of hoist was enclosed at the top, the first floor level and in the instance seen above, from the canopy upwards. The enclosed section was to prevent inclement or windy weather from entering the warehouse, particularly important for goods required to be stored in a dry place. In all probability a set of internal doors would also be fitted. On the other warehouse wall there were two other external lift shafts as can be seen in image 'mrcgy916a'.
