Ex-LNWR 'Super D' 0-8-0 No 49212 nears Castle Bromwich with a freight train on the down goods line

Ex-LNWR 'Super D' 0-8-0 No 49212 nears Castle Bromwich with a freight train on the down goods line. Bob Essery records that the presence of these ex-LNWR locomotives were not unknown at Washwood Heath Sidings but they were rarely serviced by Saltley shed. Instead they were sent to the up sidings where, on the ash pits at the Bromford end of the sidings, the fires could be cleaned and the locomotive prepared for its return to the Bescot area. Built as LNWR No 1128 by Crewe works in August 1913 No 49212 was rebuilt as a G2a class locomotive and remained in service until April 1956 when it was withdrawn from 2B Nuneaton shed.
