Ex-LMS 2-6-0+0-6-2 Garrett No 47967 is seen running bunker first past Bordesley Junction Signal Box on a Class J through empty mineral working to Kings Norton sidings. Built at Beyer Peacock in August 1930 No 47967 was to remain in service until November 1957 when it was withdrawn from Hasland shed to be scrapped in December 1957 by Crewe works. Whilst the class was designed to offer considerable power having two sets of powered chassis, the design was flawed by the meddling of Derby's Design Office in compelling Beyer Peacock to adopt standard Midland Railway components. Thus axle boxes designed for small 0-6-0 locomotives were used on these powerful locomotives leading to the constant hot axle problem that plagued the LMS for the first decade of its existence. Poor draughting and short travel slides to name but a few of the mandatory requirements compounded the problem. The power requirement to obviate the need for double heading heavy goods trains was finally fulfilled within a few years by the introduction by William Stanier's 2-8-0 8F design and later in British Railways days, by Riddles 2-10-0 9F design.
