The signals on the left are protecting the up slow line to Halesowen and the signals on the right give the right of way to traffic continuing on the up fast line. The use of repeater signals was not uncommon and were employed where visibility may be obstructed by lineside architecture or physical conditions. In this instance the road bridge to the south of the station and the footbridge in the station were potential hazards so the suspended co-acting signal arms allowed the crews of passing trains to view the signals safely.
