An unidentified ex-LMS 4F 0-6-0 is shunting wagons at the closed Bournville engine shed site on Wednesday 5th July 1961. The shed's water tank is prominent on the right side of the photograph, high up on its base. The main line to the south curves away past the shed, the off signal indicating that a train is due to pass through. The single track Lifford branch, at one time the route of the Birmingham West Suburban Railway, curves away to the left, staying close to the canal. The shed in front of the Bournville signal box is presumably a gangers' hut. The houses seen in the distance are in the Birmingham suburb of Cotteridge. All was soon to change. Demolition work on the engine shed was to start in November and the Lifford branch was to be closed the following year.
