British Railways built Ivatt 4MT 2-6-0 No 43040 inside the roundhouse on a sunny day, most probably in 1959. The very high running plate of this 1947 design, making motion and pipework more accessible for maintenance, is well shown in this view. Although the photo is undated, this Ivatt 4MT was one was one of the four reallocated to the depot in January 1959, the others being No 43012, No 43027 and No 43033. It was reallocated to Saltley later that year, along with all but two of Bournville's more modern engines.
