LMS Route: Evesham to Birmingham

The fireman exchanges tokens with the signalman on a Redditch to Ashchurch train in June 1962. The token was placed within a leather pouch attached to the large hoop designed to make it easy for the exchange to take place at speed rather than stopping. The fireman was handing over the token to the section of line it was leaving whilst the signalman was handing over the token for the next section. The token could only be released for the next section by the signalman at the next signal box, thereby ensuring no other trains could enter the block section.
