Looking towards Nuneaton along Shustoke station's up platform, which is now looking very tired, in 1949. The 'running-in' board, the correct terminology for the station nameboard. is of an LMS 'Hawkseye' design. The ladder leaning against the 'running-in' board would have been used by the junior porter to light or switch-off the oil lamp which would have been sitting in the lamppost. Within the station would be a lamp room within which spare oil lamps and parts together with the oil and wicks required to maintain their well-being would be stored. The lamps would not just be used to light the platform and station building but would be used on signals too. On the left are panels of the Midland Railways' distinctive fencing with its diagonal battens.
