Looking in the direction of Kenilworth from the Leamington end of the station with the water treatment plant clearly visible adjacent to Milverton shed. In the 1930s the LMS had embarked on a major programme of installing such plants across the country as the problem of hard water causing lime scale in boilers had been identified as a significant cause of boiler deterioration. Boilers in hard water areas required significant rectification work as the lime scale would in the course of time eat into stays and steel plating. The build up of sediment inside the boiler would also create hot spots within the boiler and firebox preventing the water from both cooling the plating as well reducing the heat raising capabilities of the boiler.
