Ex-LMS 8F 2-8-0 No 48012 is seen with steam lifting from its safety valves whilst opposite in cold condition is ex-LNWR 7F 0-8-0 No 49397. The open wagons on the right are well heaped with clinker and ash resulting from the disposal of the shed's locomotives. In old secondary sheds such as at Milverton the loading of the ash would have been undertaken by hand, a hard and dirty job. Built at Crewe works in December 1936, No 48012 remained in service until the last year of steam operation on British Railways being withdrawn in March 1968 from Edgehill shed to be scrapped in August 1968 by J Buttigieg of Newport. The 'Super D' was also built at Crewe works but in November 1903, and it too was retired from a Liverpool shed, in this instance Speake Junction in November 1959 to be scrapped at Crewe works in November 1960.
