Tile Hill Station: lnwrth714
View of the down line's track being renewed at Tile Hill
station with old ballast being removed by wagons on the up line. This view
shows just how much work was involved with the down line and trailing points to
the goods yard having been entirely removed to allow the ballast to be dug up
by the 'Drot', a front-loading tracked vehicle. Its not known if the rails,
sleepers and ballast were being replaced enbloc although the answer is probably
yes bearing in mind electrification was not too far in the future. Examination
of image 'lnwrchg1065' shows that the timber
sleepers near Canley Halt, just a few miles away from Tile Hill, had been
replaced with concrete sleepers by November 1963. The pointwork offers no clues
because despite being lifted and stored on top of the siding the complexity of
the pointwork necessitates the use of timber sleepers even to this day.
