Looking north with the lines to New Street on the left and the lines to Aston on the right as seen on 28th September 1963. The photographer, Dennis Norton has climbed Stechford No 2 up home signal which controlled traffic emanating from New Street via Adderley Park. Over the years the many lines built around New Street formed a circular route which allowed traffic from the south to depart Stechford taking the Aston line and, by travelling through Aston, Perry Barr and Winson Green, could enter New Street station from the north. In the main most of the traffic using the Aston line was goods traffic primarily destined for Washwood Heath and Bescot. Passenger trains were primarily excursions or diversions although there was at least one scheduled service, that being a local passenger working from Walsall to Coventry.
