LMS Route: Rugby to Wolverhampton
Stechford Station: lnwrstfd1604
Looking West towards New Street to the left and the line to
Aston and Washwood Heath sidings to the right. The route to Aston from
Stechford opened in 1882 and was designed to relieve pressure on the Stour
Valley line which ran from New Street to Wolverhampton High Level station. Some
expresses to Wolverhampton were divided at Stechford with one portion
continuing to New Street and then on to Wolverhampton calling at all stations
and the other proceeding directly. There were also services between Coventry
and Walsall that used this route and it was a diversionary route during
maintenance work on the Trent Valley when trains would be diverted from
Stafford along the original Grand Junction Railway route. The line was also
important for goods traffic eliminating the need for goods trains to approach
the congested lines out side of New Street with Washwood Heath sidings being
accessed via a junction on the Aston-Stechford
line.
