View of one of the excavators being used to build the extension to the line from Sutton Coldfield to Lichfield. The steam navvy was so much more productive than the hundreds of navvies used in the pioneer days of railways. The trackwork seems in very good order bearing in mind its a contractor's 'temporary way' track. The use of spiked flat-bottom rail (no chairs evident) and the lack of ballast would seem to confirm that this was not 'permanent way' track. C1882
