LMS Route: Birmingham New Street to Lichfield

Ex-LMS 2-6-2T No 40080 stands at the head of a down service from Lichfield to New Street station. To the left is the platform canopy which was destroyed by the accident on 23 January 1955 and which killed seventeen people. The platforms at Sutton Coldfield were built with brick facing walls topped with stone paving with gravel hard standing except for the area immediately in front of the buildings which were paved. On the right is the the water tank would have supplied the station and adjacent goods yard (which is out of sight to the left of the photographer). On the top right hand side of the tank can be seen the ballcock which controlled the level of water within the tank.
