LMS Route: Birmingham New Street to Harborne

View of the electric train staff apparatus with each holding a set of staffs for either Harborne and Rotton Park Road in November 1934. As Rotton Park Road was the only passing place on the line a set of staffs were required to control each of the two sections, one on either side of the station. Multiple staffs for each section were required to allow for the vagaries of timetables that might require several trains to pass in one direction only and therefore there was no return trip to return the staff. The apparatus seen above holding the staffs could only be operated by the signalman at the station destined to be visited, in this case either Harborne or Monument Lane.
