Ex-LNWR 3P 4-4-0 Precursor class No 5300 'Hydra' is seen standing in the Stafford bay at the head of a down local passenger train. This class of locomotives were once the premier express design on the LNWR but by the late twenties had been relegated to lowly local passenger duties. In this 1929 view of 'Hydra' she still bore the LMS No 5300 which would shortly be used as part of the allocated numbers for Stanier's Black 5 locomotives. 'Hydra' would then be renumbered in the 20000 series, what is described as the duplicate list, giving her the number 25300. Built at Crewe works as LNWR No 4491 in August 1905 No 5300 was scrapped in July 1940.
