Close up of image 'lnwrrm862' showing a LNWR 4-4-0 at the head of an express using the scissor crossing to exit the southern section of the down platform. On the right next to the water column stabled on the siding is a 'Loco' coal wagon, its contents being very welcome for crews of locomotives throwing too much coal out of the chimney. For many years after the L&BR opened in 1838 the 82 mile distance from Euston to Rugby was at the very limit for many locomotives and consequently they needed either to be relieved by another locomotive or to be topped up with coal and water. By the time this photograph was taken the coal capacity was much better but there still could be occasions, if a locomotive was in need of repair or being shopped, when locomotives might need topping up. The 'Loco' coal wagon on the right has been strategically placed to top up the tenders of such locomotives in order to save time in taking the locomotive to the shed.
