LNWR 0-8-0 G1 class No 2296 is seen passing under the GC bridge on a long up goods train circa 1920-22. The G1 class was a superheated version of the LNWR's G class with 8 inch piston valves. The prototype G1 locomotive, LNWR No 2653, was rebuilt in 1912 from a member of the LNWR G class. Its success resulted in the LNWR building a further 170 new locomotives between 1912 and 1918. In addition to the new locomotives, a further 278 older locomotives were rebuilt to the G1 specification between 1917 and 1934.
