LMS 4-6-0 large boiler Claughton No 5962 on an up express with the carriage works to the right on 14th May 1932. These were rebuilt standard LNWR Claughtons as an attempt to resolve the numerous issues associated with this class of locomotives. As can be seen by the burnt lower portion of the smokebox door, problems still existed. Unfortunately the process of continual improvement to the rebuilt class wasn't quick enough and before the benefits of resolving excessive loss of steam at the pistons by using multiple narrow rings the Patriot Class was introduced. The Patriots were in fact a combination of using the new Royal Scot chassis together with the boiler designed for the rebuilt Claughton.
