LMS 4-6-0 Royal Scot class No 6139 'The Welch Regiment' on a down special leaves Rugby station just before the outbreak of the Second World War

LMS 4-6-0 Royal Scot class No 6139 'The Welch Regiment' on a down special leaves Rugby station just before the outbreak of the Second World War in August 1939. The addition of the high sided Stanier tender gave the class a better range through increased coal and water capacity. It undoubtedly was a vast improvement on the eye providing a better visual balance to the large diameter boiler. Built by the North British Locomotive Company in October 1927, No 6139 was rebuilt with the standard 2A tapered boiler in November 1946 and in this form remained in service until October 1962 when it was withdrawn from Newton Heath shed for scrapping at Crewe works the following year in May 1963.
