LMS 4-6-2 Princess Royal Coronation class No 6223 'Princess Alice' is seen travelling on the station's through roads whilst at the head of a down express in 1938. Built at Crewe works in June 1937, No 6223 was one of a number of streamlined Coronation class locomotives designed by Stanier in response to Gresley's A4 class of locomotives introduced on the LNER East Coast main line. Other locomotives of the Coronation class were built in non-streamlined form, a form reputedly favoured by Stanier, and after the Second World War the streamlined casings found on all of the streamlined locomotives were also removed. The reason was access for maintenance was much easier and in non-streamlined form No 6223 was to remain in service until October 1963 when it was withdrawn from Polmadie shed in Glasgow to be scrapped the same month by Crewe works.
