Peter Storey writes, 'Could the Black 5 have come off after going through a trap point hidden by the coach? As it is laying next to a trailing point this could well have been protected by a trap point. Dave Blower writes, 'Looks like the loco ran off at the trap points of a siding that connected the bays line to the Up London line (see low resolution signalling diagram below)..' Bob Haddon writes, 'The loco I would guess would be the south end pilot, the work the pilot did was often done at break neck speeds as it had to be done on the running lines between freight and expresses. Could the 5 been running back towards the station light engine and on the crossover the tender derailed followed by the whole of the loco? The trackwork looks reasonable as its flat bottom rail so would have been replaced in the late 1950s era'.
