A 1920 aerial view of the immediate northern approach to Rugby station with No 5 Signal Cabin on the left, the entrance to the goods yard lower right and and BTH in the background. An LNWR 0-6-0 18 inch Goods is shunting in the yard whilst a LNWR 0-6-0ST Crewe Special locomotive heads north with empty open wagons with one bearing the legend 'Exhall'. Stephen Lea writes, 'Exhall Colliery was located near to Nuneaton. The Midland Railway set of carriages were of the 'short buffer' type (i.e. close coupled and comprised a 4 compartment Third Brake, an 8 compartment Third, a 7 compartment First or Composite, a 4 compartment Third) and were probably one of the eight 9' 0" wide Nottingham area sets of 1911: D603 / D605 / D602 / D603. The Carriage Marshalling book for October 1922 shows one such set making a round trip from Leicester, arriving at Rugby 1:45pm and departing at 2:09pm. This doesn't leave much time for standing around outside the station'. In response to a question about the cattle wagons seen in the foreground, Stephen added, 'Limewash as disinfectant, was banned circa 1926 from memory. It was usually pretty liberally applied and so coats the outside below the level of the uppermost slat. The two cattle carriages on the extreme left are, I think, Midland vehicles and freshly painted light grey, which is almost indistinguishable from white in this photo.'
