Ex-LMS Rugby based 50 ton Breakdown Crane 1013 is seen stabled ready to depart at a moment's notice inside Rugby shed. John Woods writes, '1013 was based at Rugby for many years and this may be it. The crane was a Craven 50 ton Steam Crane which I believe had replaced the shed's previous 75 ton crane. Following the closure of Rugby depot I believe it when into store for a short period then sent to Longsite before ending up at Carlisle to replace their damaged 75 ton crane. It was still in service until 1980 and was destined to be the last steam crane in service but it was taken over Shap above its permitted speed and burnt out the white metal bearings. New ones were found and replaced in Carnforth steam museum shed and where they burnt out again on its first test run along the Cumbria coast.' Stan Bell suggested the following link for people wishing to have a better understanding of 'Steam Cranes'.
