Ex-LNWR Renown Class No 5117 'Polyphemus' stands alongside a parachute water tank at Rugby shed

Ex-LNWR Renown Class No 5117 'Polyphemus' stands alongside a parachute water tank at Rugby shed. Rebuilt from a Jubilee class locomotive as LNWR No 1929 at Crewe works in April 1899, No 5117 was renumbered by the LMS in February 1924 and remained in service until it was withdrawn in December 1930 to be scrapped at Crewe works. The name derived from mythology and was first used on a short firebox passenger locomotive in 1846 but in this instance the inspiration was said to be derived from HMS Polyphemus, an armoured torpedo ram which served with the navy from 1881 to circa 1903. Things to note are the LMS lampirons, the absence of a smokebox number plate, large numerals on the cab side and its driver reading a newspaper.
