English Electric Type 4 1Co-Co2 No D224 stands at Rugby's up platform with an express for Euston on 29th March 1965. Three of the four men are wearing classic 'grease top' caps once beloved of locomotive crews. Built by English Electrics' Vulcan Foundry in August 1959, D224 was to receive its new number and classification under British Railways' TOPs system which was applied to the locomotive in March 1974. As Class 40 No 40024 it remained in service until June 1984 when it was withdrawn from LO Longsight MPD to be scrapped by Crewe works.
