LNWR 0-8-2T No 2277 pauses during its duties when shunting in Rugby's down exchange sidings

LNWR 0-8-2T No 2277 pauses during its duties when shunting in Rugby's down exchange sidings. Behind the PW hut are a number of wagons including a LNWR wagon and, to its right, a loco coal wagon which was dedicated only to the carrying of coal to be used by LNWR locomotives. A member of the LNWR's 1185 Class, No 2277 was built by Crewe works in September 1915, and was to remain in service until October 1934 when it was withdrawn to be scrapped by Crewe works. Designed by Charles Bowen-Cooke, the class of thirty locomotives was introduced in 1911 all of which in 1923 passed into LMS ownership with eight surviving to be taken into British Railways ownership in 1948. They were designed to perform the duties previously undertaken by two other classes of locomotives. The 1185 class were essentially a tank version of the 'G' class of 0-8-0 tender locomotives. They were fitted with saturated 'Precursor' class boilers with lagged ends, round-top fireboxes, and sloping coal bunkers. The main wheels were coupled by three overlapping rods and the third pair of wheels were flangeless to aid their ability to operate on the tight curves frequently found in goods yards and sidings. The earlier locomotives initially had slender tapered Cooke buffers but these were replaced by those of standard Webb pattern which were fitted from new on later engines. Braking was by steam, but vacuum brakes were provided to operate fitted or passenger stock if required.
