View of Rugby's Refreshment Room doorway and the signage that was liberally distributed on the walls. The 'Rugby' sign was LNWR in origin and is seen here some twenty years after the LNWR was absorbed by the LMS. When first erected the sign had white lettering on a dark blue background but under LMS management in the 1930s this was changed to black lettering on a yellow background. The advertising posters are a mix of retail and business notices including 'Dewars White Label Whisky', 'Austin Reed' (tailors), 'Mackintosh's' (Quality Street chocolates), 'MHT of Wolverhampton' (Heat Treatment and Shot blasting), 'Rozalex' (Applied before work to keep hands clean), and 'Lion Packing'. Despite its size the large station sign fixed to the wall of the refreshment room is a typical LNWR sign found across the system being constructed from timber. Other signs suspended from the roof read from front to back 'Telegraph Office', 'Booking Office', 'Way Out', and 'Gentlemen'. In contrast to the large news kiosk on the down platform, the up platform's kiosk was a much more modest affair. There is very little advertising evident compared to later photographs. |
