Ex-LNWR 'G2a' 0-8-0 No 48927 with wreath on smokebox to mark the closure of Rugby Erecting Workshop in Spring 1959. The locomotive is standing on one of the three roads which ran into the Erecting Workshop. Ray Sharratt writes, 'the Super D was the very last locomotive to have an overhaul in Rugby's Erecting Workshop.' Built by Crewe works as a Class 'B' locomotive in January 1903, No 48927 was initially numbered by the LNWR as No 1226, then by the LMS as No 8927 in January 1928 before British Railways renumbered by adding 40,000 to its LMS number in January 1950. In parallel the locomotive was rebuilt a Class G1 in March 1926 and then again as a Class G2a in September 1947 in which form it ran until January 1960 when it was withdrawn from 8A Edge Hill shed. In January 1928, No 48927 had been fitted with a belpaire boiler.
