Ex-LMS Rebuilt Patriot Class 4-6-0 No 45536 'Private W Wood VC' heads a down express through the 'rat hole'

Ex-LMS Rebuilt Patriot Class 4-6-0 No 45536 'Private W Wood VC' heads a down express through the 'rat hole'. Behind the locomotive is an unidentified ex-LMS Princess Coronation locomotive in British Railways red livery on the up fast line. The Patriot class locomotive was another 'rebuild' of a former LNWR Claughton Class locomotive being rebuilt by Crewe works in May 1933. The name had been previously carried by a LNWR Claughton locomotive and was transferred to the Patriot Class in May 1933. Following its rebuilding with a Stanier 2A tapered boiler in November 1948, No 45536 remained in service until October 1962 when it was withdrawn from 41A Darnall shed to be stored until Match 1964 at 41A Barrow Hill shed.
