An unknown Sulzer Type 2 D500 class locomotive approaches Old Farm bridge on a Northampton to Rugby service

An unknown Sulzer Type 2 D500 class locomotive approaches Old Farm bridge on a Northampton to Rugby service. The British Railways Sulzer Type 2 diesel locomotives, later classified under TOPs as Class 24 locomotives, were built from 1958 to 1961. One hundred and fifty-one locomotives were built by Derby, Crewe and Darlington, the first twenty of them being part of the British Railways 1955 Modernisation Plan. The class was used as the basis for the development of the Class 25 locomotives with the final survivor, No 24081 being withdrawn from Crewe depot in 1980.
