Ex-LNWR 5XP 4-6-0 Claughton class No 5970 'Patience' is seen leaving the station at the head of the up Irish Mail to Euston on 2nd April 1929. Built as LNWR No 2499 at Crewe works in February 1920, No 5509 received its LMS running number in February 1927 and was to remain in service for a relatively short period time as the class were not considered a success. They were replaced by a combination of the Patriot and Jubilee class introduced under Fowler and Stanier with No 5970 being withdrawn in December 1935 to be scrapped shortly afterwards by Crewe works.
