LMS 0-6-0 4F No 4087 is seen with its crew breaking up coal in the tender whilst being piloted at the head of a stopping passenger train circa 1927. The photograph is obviously taken in the early to late 1920s at the latest because the engine's number is on the tender. This was standard Midland Railway practice which was initially adopted by the LMS on its formation. The practice ceased because of the practical issues relating to the fact that engines took longer to repair than tenders. Placing numbers on the cabside, as adopted by other railways, meant that fewer tenders were needed to be built as they could be exchanged when the locomotives left the workshops. Built by Kerr Stuart in November 1925 No 4087 remained in service until February 1962 when it was withdrawn from Royston shed to be scrapped in March 1962 by Crewe works.
