Ex-LMS 4-6-2 No 46232 'Duchess of Montrose' with the down Royal Scot service on 21st September 1951. Opposite, on the up side of the station is ex-LNWR G2 Class 0-8-0 No 49446 waiting in between shunting turns. Built as LMS No 6232 by Crewe works in July 1938, No 46232 was one of five locomotives built in non-streamlined form at a cost of £10,659 each. Its notable that it has 'British Railways' lettered on its tender prior to the adoption of the first corporate logo. The 'Duchess' was to remain in service until December 1962 when it was withdrawn to be scrapped. The 'Super D' was built in October 1922 as LNWR No 1012 by Crewe works which it retained until renumbered as LMS No 9446 in June 1925 and again by British Railways in September 1948 by adding 40000 to the LMS number making it No 49446 which it retained until April 1964 when it was withdrawn from J Cashmore's of Great Bridge.
