LMS 8P 4-6-2 Coronation class No 6232 'Duchess of Montrose' is
seen near Nuneaton station on the down Royal Scot circa 1938. The loadings of
certain named trains such as the Royal Scot could exceed the capacity of one
train and the train would be split in to two parts and, as seen above by the
use of the reporting code W63-1, this is the first of the two trains.
The locomotive is seen in original form - without smoke
deflectors which were added later to dissipate smoke - and in the view of many
enhanced the beauty of the engine. Built at Crewe works in July 1938 this
Stanier Pacific remained in service despite suffering bomb damage at
Berkhamstead until December 1962 when it was withdrawn from Polmadie shed in
Glasgow being scrapped during November 1963 by Crewe works.
