Looking towards Tamworth with the bridge carrying the MR's Birmingham to Leicester line in the distance

Close up of image 'lnwrns2669' looking towards Tamworth with the bridge carrying the MR's Birmingham to Leicester line in the distance. The former LNWR Nuneaton Down Sidings signal cabin can be seen standing on the left. Behind the signal cabin (on the LNWR the buildings were described as signal cabins whereas most other railways referred to them as signal boxes) a parachute water column can be seen. The reference to 'parachute' is a description of the water tank. This type of water column was frequently seen at locations where they would be in constant use and a readily available supply of water was required. The water column on the platform is minus its 'bag', the hose placed in the tender or bunker to top up a steam locomotive's water supply, but is presumably still to be used as otherwise it would have been removed when the platform was remodelled.
