LNWR 0-8-0 No 1282, a 'B' Class Compound locomotive, is seen standing cold outside of Nuneaton shed ready for service the following Monday. The 'B' Class was a four-cylinder compound locomotive that derived from the earlier 'A' Class, a three-cylinder compound but with a boiler 5 inches larger in diameter and pressed a further 25 psi higher to 200 psi. But the bulbous 'piano' front covering the rocking arms driving the valves for the outside cylinders could never be elegant and made the design a visual disaster. The weight of cylinders and valve gear at the front was not adequately supported, and was a 'heavy' front end. All were later rebuilt, mostly to 'G1' class.
