View of an unidentified ex-LNWR 0-8-0 passes Nuneaton's up goods yard signal box as it starts away with a freight working to Rugby. The locomotive is still bearing on the cab side its cast number plates indicating that the photograph was taken before 1928 by when most pre-grouping locomotives had acquired their LMS number. On the right is a Coventry Cooperative wagon, one of many the society owned being one of the largest coal merchants in the area. The two men on the left are shunters, easily recognisable due to the shunting poles they are carrying. The main tool of shunters working with hook-and-chain couplings was a shunting pole, which allowed the shunter to reach between wagons to fasten and unfasten couplings without having physically to go between the vehicles. The pole had a metal hook at one end which was used to 'hook' the coupling and by resting the pole on a buffer, lift the coupling clear of the hook on the opposite wagon.
