Ex-LMS 4-6-0 Rebuilt Patriot class No 45525 'Colwyn Bay' is seen entering Nuneaton station's platform four at the head of an up express service circa 1962. The history of this locomotive was convoluted because it was first built as a LNWR 4-6-0 Claughton, No 856 'E Tootle Broadhurst' and after being renumbered by the LMS as No 5916 in June 1927 it was rebuilt as a Patriot class locomotive at Derby works in March 1933. In its new form it still retained No 5916 until 1934 (but without the name 'E Tootle Broadhurst') when it was subject to the renumbering scheme initiated by the LMS in 1934 being assigned by the LMS No 5525. The name 'Colwyn Bay' was added to the locomotive in 1937 and No 5525 remained in service, despite the damage sustained in the accident at Brock in November 1946, until August 1948 when it was rebuilt with tapered boiler to the same specification as the rebuilt Royal Scot class locomotives. In its third and final guise No 5525 remained in service until May 1963 when it was withdrawn from Upperby shed in Carlisle being scrapped during June 1963 by Crewe works.
