Looking along Lea Hall's up platform towards Birmingham with the main Booking Office suspended above the line circa 1939. The Booking Office fronts on to the footbridge with a canopy projecting out from the offices covering the bridge. Although planned prior to the Second World War it had a strategic purpose in transporting passengers to nearby factories. The use of concrete in its construction, in lieu of normal building materials, reflected the shortage of materials and skilled labour. Concrete was both an easy material to work with and its construction used less skilled labour than otherwise would be the case. The style of architecture also had echoes of the Southern Railway and London Transport's mid to late 1930 designs.
