Close up of image 'lnwrhiaj705' showing the original
B&DJR Hampton station building which housed a booking hall, waiting rooms
and parcels office. The original platform's height is significantly lower than
platforms later installed at stations throughout the country because the floor
height of the carriages from rail level increased as to accommodate more
substantial underframes. Initially, railway carriages were based upon road
coaches with passengers climbing up into the body of the coach via steps on the
outside. Later carriages, which provided several compartments, required more
axles, first six-wheel carriages followed by bogie sets necessary to
accommodate carriages of sixty feet in length. The platform seen above would
have at one time been graced with the presence of the royal family on their
early travels to the north of England.
